"Mother Daughter" Luisa Deflorian · 2025
To be a daughter and a mother is to inhabit a threshold. On one side is what I have received: my mother’s voice, her presence, the traces that have helped shape me. On the other is what comes to life in my relationship with my three children. I stand between these movements, not simply as a link between them, but as someone who receives, chooses and transforms.In the paintings, the forms seem to touch and mirror one another without ever merging. The space between them is not a separation: it is where what I have received meets what is born in my relationships with my children.
Motherhood does not erase the daughter I am. It invites me to recognise what I carry with me, to distinguish what I wish to preserve from what I can let go. Each of my children opens a different path to this understanding, without being an extension of the person who gave them life.To belong to a story does not mean repeating it. I can be a daughter, a mother and myself all at once. I can feel my connection to those who came before me and those who come after, while leaving each of us — myself included — the freedom to have a form of our own.
